Synopsis
Five families occupy an island off the coast of Denmark. Tourists were few but tolerated each summer. This year, the tourists failed to arrive. The cargo ferry captain returned to the island to report that the mainland had ‘just disappeared’. Without fuel, she tied the boat by the island’s small dock. Now a steady stream of newcomers have started to arrive, washing up on the shore in small rafts, starving and desperate, seeking sanctuary. Ten years on from the mainland’s disappearance, the island’s population has grown to 100. Of the original families there are now just nine children left. One leads them, Orla.
